Wildcats fall to Vanderbilt 15-11

Nashville, Tenn. - Villanova lost their third consecutive game to Vanderbilt on Saturday afternoon 15-11. The Wildcats are now 0-3 in conference play, Vanderbilt advances to 2-1. Jillian Swikart (Rumson, N.J.) finished with four goals and one assist, marking her fourth four-goal game of the season.

Vanderbilt found the back of the net just two minutes into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. They scored again to take a 2-0 lead before Jillian Swikart scored the Wildcats' first goal of the game to bring the score within one. The goal halted the Commodores run momentarily, but back to back goals for Vanderbilt put them up 4-1 forcing a Villanova timeout. Out of the timeout, Grainger Rosati (Boonton Township, N.J.) scored her first goal of the day when Swikart found her right in front of the net. Gwyn Devin of Vanderbilt scored her third goal of the game in only 10 minutes of play to extend the Commodores lead to 5-2. Villanova sparked a run at the 19:26 mark when Carlye Maita (Mendham, N.J.) and Ashley Lynch (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) scored consecutive unassisted goals to bring the Wildcats back within one goal at 5-4. The teams traded scores with Liz Trojan (Airmont, N.Y.) and Devin Hassinger (Glenmoore, Pa.) getting it done for the Wildcats. Villanova trailed 7-6 going into the half.

The Wildcats took 15 shots to Vanderbilt's 12 and also led 9-5 on the draw. The Commodores were 10-for-10 on clear attempts and went 2-for-3 on free position chances in the first half.

It only took one minute for Vanderbilt to add to their lead in the second half, but Villanova responded quickly. Maggie Jennings (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Swikart scored one minute apart from each other to tie the game at eight. The two teams kept up the pace, each scoring again to retie the game at nine and 10. Swikart's tying goal was her fourth of the day. Vanderbilt scored twice to take a late 12-10 lead with 9:46 left in the game but Katie Comerford buried her first goal of the game to try and keep the Wildcats in it. The Commodores scored three unanswered goals down the stretch to put the game away with a final score of 15-11.

The Wildcats never had the lead in the contest. Despite both teams shooting 26 shots, Vanderbilt had more on goal with 20 to Villanova's 15. The Commodores finished the game 17-for-18 on clear attempts.

Villanova travels to UConn on Wednesday for another BIG EAST road game. They return home a week from today to take on #6 Florida.
