Despite dominated the face-off battle the Villanova Wildcats (1-4) couldn't pull out the victory as they fell to Delaware (4-2) on Saturday afternoon inside Villanova Stadium.
Senior Jake Froccaro has an impressive performance at the faceoff, winning 13-of-18 and collected a career high 11 ground balls. He added a goal and an assist to finish the day with two points. Moving up in the record books was graduate student, Jack Curran. He led the team with four goals and was the only Wildcats to score multiple goals against the Blue Hens. With his four point performance he moved to seventh all-time in points with 134.
The Blue Hens took a lead minutes into the game and the Wildcats were able to tie it up twice once on a goal by Curran the other by Jake Froccaro but Delaware went on a 5-1 run to jump out to a four goal led with five to go in the second quarter.
Over the final five minutes, the Wildcats scored the three goal to bring themselves within one. Devin McNamara found Kurtis Naslonski, and the long-stick defensemen scored his third goal of the season. Next it was John Kluh who drove and scored with just seconds left on the shot clock and the final goal of the half was scored by Jack Curran on a man-up opportunity on a pass from Connor Kirst.
The 7-6 game would only last a few minutes before Delaware's Joe Eisele and Charlie Kitchen would score back to back goal to solidify their led. Connor Kirst found Christian Cuccinello during a man-up opportunity to give the Wildcats hope but then both teams went scoreless for over 10 minutes.
It was Delaware who struck first with a goal just over three minutes into the final quarter and seconds later it was freshman Jared Nugent who was able to score an unassisted goal and bring Villanova within two. Andrew Romagnoli, who finished with five points for the Blue Hens, scored on an extra man opportunity.
Curran tried to keep the Wildcats in it with an unassisted goal and over seven minutes left to play but Delaware's faceoff specialist, Jake Hervada won the battle at the X and drove and scored just seven seconds later to give Delaware the momentum. Romagnoli and Curran both added one goal for their respective teams to make the final 13-10.
Sophomore Nick Testa got the start in goal and had six saves and collected two ground balls. Senior Dan Willis played the final 30 minutes in net and finished with eight saves, a season high.
Villanova will travel to Brown for a midweek matchup. The Wildcats will take on the Bears on Tuesday in Providence, Rhode Island at 4 P.M.
