VILLANOVA, Pa. - Freshman attack Katie Comerford continued her impressive start to her career, but the Wildcats (1-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) could not recover from a 12-2 run, as Villanova fell to Monmouth 17-11 Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Comerford finished the contest with six points on three goals and three assists. She also scooped six groundballs, earned a drawl control, and caused a turnover. Through four games in her career, she has logged 13 goals, four assists, and 12 groundballs.
Classmate Liz Trojan also recorded a hat trick, her second in four games. Fellow first year players Maggie Jennings scored two goals, while Carlin Isaacson and Grainger Rosati each netted a score. Sophomore Devin Brown's converted free position goal was the only non-rookie goal for Villanova. Seniors Carolyn Dottino and Catherine Bendinelli each had an assist against the Hawks.
Senior Sam Scarfogliero had a day defensively, adding six caused turnovers to her recently set program record in the category. She now has an even 50 caused turnovers through 51 games in her four-year career.
The Hawks were led in scoring by Alexa Smith who has four goals. Along with Smith three additional Monmouth players recorded a total of four points each.
After Monmouth scored the first goal of the game 49 seconds in, Liz Trojan responded with back-to-back unanswered goals. Both of Trojan's goals were assisted by Comerford as the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead. The Hawks scored to take a slim 3-2 lead, but Brown's free position goal just a minute later knotted the score once against at 3-3.
Monmouth's game-altering run followed as the Hawks jumped to a 15-5 lead. The Wildcat defense calmed down after the run, only allowing two goals in the final 23:58. Villanova finished the half on a 5-2 run, but ran out of time as Monmouth earned the 17-11 win.
Villanova will have the week off from game competition and classes with spring break. The Wildcats return to action on March 11, when they take on Drexel at Vidas Field.
