VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell 10-6 against the Bucknell Bison (2-0, 0-0 Patriot League) in the first game of the 2017 season. Freshmen Liz Trojan and Katie Comerford combined for five goals in their first career game as Wildcats.
Trojan scored her first goal of her hat-trick performance less than two minutes into the first half, with the assist going to senior attack Carolyn Dottino to give the Wildcats an early lead.
The Bison responded with two goals take their first lead of the game at 24:06. Sophomore Jillian Swikart netted her first goal of the season soon after on a free position to tie the game back up at two goals apiece. Trojan added her second goal of half - this time on a free position as Villanova reclaimed the lead at 3-2.
Bucknell retaliated with a 5-0 scoring run to end the half, including three goals by the Bison's Eve Lukowski, as Bucknell would take a 7-3 advantage into the intermission. Lukowski added her fifth goal of the game to begin the scoring of the second half to expand the Bison's lead to 8-3.
The Wildcats ended their scoring drought as senior Catherine Bendinelli found Trojan in front of the net for the freshmen's third goal of the game. Three minutes later Bucknell was able to find the back of the net to increase their lead to five with the score at 9-4.
Katie Comerford netted her first two goals within the final six minutes, but ultimately, Bucknell was able to come out with the 10-6 victory.
Villanova looks to rebound next Saturday at home against nationally-ranked Cornell. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m. after the Villanova men's lacrosse game against Yale.
