Wildcats Suffer Loss to Rutgers 14-8 in Season Opener

The Villanova Women's Lacrosse team (0-1) dropped their season opener on Friday afternoon to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-0) by a final of 14-8. Graduate student Jackie Froccaro (Sands Point, N.Y.) led the Wildcats with four goals and four draw controls.

Head Coach Julie Young shared, "there wre some great plays on defense and attack but we definitely learned from our mistakes. We will use this game as a learning expereince and woek hard at making the adjustments before out next game."

The Wildcats took an early 2-1 lead in the opening 15 minutes of the game off back to back goals by Froccaro and Chelsey Henderson (West Long Branch, N.J.). Then the Scarlet Knights scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead, Rutgers junior Kristina Dunphey scored two of those goals and finished the night with five.

Senior Meghan Breen (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored the Wildcats last goal of the first half with 6:20 remaining but two goals by the Scarlet Knights before the end of the half made the score 7-3 heading into the locker room.

Goalkeeper Jaclyn Fraum (Pittsford, N.Y.) played the first half in the goal for the Wildcats and finished with 5 saves.

Villanova came out to a strong start in the second half, Froccaro scored her second goal of the game and freshman Jillian Swikart (Rumson, N.J.) scored her first collegiate goal with 20:28 left on the clock, to make the score 7-5.

Rutgers answered back by scoring three goals in five minutes to take a 10-5 lead. Froccaro wasn't done yet, she scored her third goal of the game to bring Nova within four with 11:45 left. The Scarlet Knights went on a three goal spree again in a span of three minutes to take a 13-6 lead over the Wildcats.

Froccaro ended the spree by scoring her final goal with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. Under a minute later Rugters Dunphey scored her fifth and final goal of the game to make the score 14-7. Villanova got on the board one more time thanks to freshman Carlye Maita (Mendham, N.J.) who scored her first collegiate goal in the match.

Sophomore goalkeeper Julia Michael (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) playing all of second half and finished with two saves.

Breen finished with two assists on the night and Maita with one.

The Wildcats return to action Saturday February 20th when the team travels to Ithaca, N.Y. to take on Cornell.

Notes: With her four goals tonight Froccaro now has 103 career goals and is four goals away from moving into seventh place on the all-time scoring list.
