Villanova, Pa. -
The Villanova women's lacrosse team (7-6, 2-2) fell to their toughest competitor of the season as the Wildcats took on the No. 8 Florida Gators (11-4, 5-0) with a final score of 21-3. The overwhelming 18-point loss marks the Wildcats worst of the season.
While the loss may have come as a blow to the Wildcats, there were some bright spots in the game.
Florida came out of the gate with pace posting three goals within the first five minutes of the first half until junior Shannon Galvin found the back of the net off a pass from senior and stellar distributor Jessica Mucci to cut the Gator lead to 3-1.
The close-gap was short lived as the Gators would then post 13 unanswered goals in the first half alone to put the game away as Villanova would go into halftime under a 16-1 deficit. The Wildcats posted only one shot in the first half compared to the Gators 29 and tallied only five of the 17 draw controls of the half.
Head Coach Julie Young can be pleased with her bench players as senior Hannah Goforth scored off a free-position shot and sophomore Catherine Bendinelli tallied a Nova goal as a pass from junior Courtney Cross. The assist marks Cross' first as a Wildcat.
In the inner circle, freshman Kathleen O'Connor, senior Jackie Froccaro and Galvin each tallied two draw controls.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as they take on fellow Philly foe the Temple Owls at 3 p.m.
