Villanova Drops Match against Drexel

Box Score

Villanova, Pa. -

The Villanova women's lacrosse team (2-4) fell, 9-5, to local opponent Drexel (2-4) on a rainy Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats trailed early as Drexel posted two goals in the first six minutes of the game. Villanova answered as the junior Kelsey Denihan found senior Hannah Goforth for a goal at 22:34 for her third goal of the season. The senior had a good day off the bench also tallying a caused turnover and a team-high three groundballs.

The score remained 2-1 for the next 20 minutes as the two teams played a fairly even defensive half before junior Shannon Galvin scored off a pass from freshman Cathleen O'Connor.

While Villanova led the half with ground balls (17 to Drexel's 14) the two teams each posted six draw controls and eight successful clears. However, the Dragons outshot the Wildcats 11-5 and that proved helpful as Drexel slipped one more goal behind junior goal keeper Jacklyn Fraum with one second remaining in the half to take Drexel into the locker room with the momentum and a 3-2 lead.

Fraum had a solid first half against an aggressive Drexel offense with six saves compared to her opponent's four. Eight of the Dragon's 11 shots in the first half were on target but Fraum stopped six of them to keep her `Cats close going into halftime. Fraum would finish the day with seven total saves.

The Wildcats came into the second half with a vengeance as Denihan scored off a free position shot in the first minute and a half. The 3-3 tied score would be the closest the Wildcats would come for the rest of the game as Drexel posted three unanswered goals to extend their lead to 6-3.

Galvin and sophomore Carolyn Dottino-Buenahora would add their own goals to the board as the `Cats continued to try to bring the score even but to no avail as the Dragons would eventually pull away with a score of 9-5.

Coach Julie Young saw great action from her players off the bench today as Dottino posted one goal off one shot with one ground ball, one caused turnover and two draw controls.

The Wildcats will be back in action on Wednesday as they play another local foe at St. Joseph's at 7 p.m.
