VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (4-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell to No. 6 Notre Dame (8-3, 1-3 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.
Freshman midfielder Becca Hetrick and junior midfielder Hannah Goforth each scored twice in the contest.
The Fighting Irish took a 2-0 advantage to start the game, but the Wildcats tied it at two with goals from sophomore midfielder Chelsey Henderson and freshman defender Mariah Salerno. Notre Dame tallied the next six goals to take an 8-2 lead.
Hetrick and sophomore attack Meghan Breen each scored in the waning minutes of the half to cut the lead. The Irish added one more with 42 seconds left, and took a 9-4 advantage into halftime.
Goforth notched a goal just over a minute after the break and brought the Wildcats within four. Hetrick scored her second goal of the afternoon, assisted by sophomore midfielder Shannon Galvin, but the Notre Dame attack picked up and scored six consecutive goals, taking a 16-6 lead.
Sophomore attack Kelsey Denihan scored with three minutes left in the game and Goforth added one with 17 seconds remaining, but Villanova fell, 17-8.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jaclyn Fraum made eight saves in the game and recorded one ground ball.
Senior defender Amy Begay led the team with three ground balls and three caused turnovers while Galvin had three draw controls.
The Fighting Irish outshot the Wildcats, 32-23, and held a 23-14 advantage in ground balls. Notre Dame also took a 15-12 advantage in draw controls over Villanova.
