Final Stats | Dig Pink night against DePaul
CHICAGO, Ill. - In a must-win match for the Villanova volleyball team, the Wildcats responded with one of their best performances of the season, shutting out DePaul, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21), Sunday afternoon at the McGrath Arena in Chicago, Ill.
"It was a good team performance today," Villanova head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Emma set extremely well and kept us balance. It's our first road in conference and a badly needed one."
The victory improves the Wildcats record to 12-10 overall and 4-5 in the BIG EAST. It also gave head coach Josh Steinbach his 110th career win, tying former head coach Dennis McGinnis with the most victories in Villanova history.
After trading scores with DePaul (15-7, 1-7 BIG EAST) to 9-9 in the beginning of set one, Villanova would respond with seven consecutive points and take over the stanza before a Claire Crutchfield kill put away the Blue Demons, 25-19.
Set two was all Villanova as they completely dominated the action from the get-go. The Wildcats would play an almost flawless set in which they hit an outstanding .414 and committed only one error in which they won, 25-16.
After the intermission, Villanova would complete the sweep with a 25-21 victory, in which the Wildcats hit a stout .452 with 18 kills on only 31 attacks.
Villanova has not surrendered a set to DePaul since Oct. 19, 2012 and concluded the regular season sweep after a shutout earlier in the year at the Jake Nevin Field House.
Sophomore Lauren Carpenter continues the surge after finishing the match with 13 kills on 25 attacks (.360). The two-time BIG EAST honoree has now reached double-digit kills in 16 consecutive matches.
Crutchfield registered eight kills on 17 attacks (.353), while Gabby Pethokoukis added seven kills and a team-high four blocks. Sophomore Colleen Hickey came off the bench to record seven kills on 16 attacks (.312) and two blocks.
After a 1-1 split on the road this weekend, the Wildcats conclude their three-match road stand at Georgetown (9-13, 3-6 BIG EAST) next Saturday at 7 p.m.
