VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats gained the upper hand early on Friday evening at Villanova Stadium and never looked back en route to a 19-5 victory over the Wagner College Seahawks. The victory improves the Wildcats record to 4-2 overall and took place on an evening that offered a taste of spring, with temperatures in the 70s.
Junior Justine Donodeo set the scoring pace for the Wildcats with five goals and two assists on the eveing. Sophomore Maria Bowman lent her support with three goals and two assists for a total of five points. Freshman Ali Judge added three goals on the night and classmate Katie Collopy chipped in with a pair of goals.
In net, freshman Julia Todd handled the first 50 minutes of action, making four saves, before sophomore Amanda Hirschfeld came on to keep the Seahawks in check over the final nine plus minutes.
The Wildcats took control early as senior Rachel Lasda scored the game's first goal. VU tallied six of the game's first seven goals, including two each off the sticks of Donodeo and Bowman. By halftime the lead was 11-5. They then made sure there would be no comeback on this night by holding the Seahawks without a goal while adding eight more to their total.
Villanova now focuses its energy on the start of BIG EAST Conference play. The 'Cats visit Georgetown on Friday, March 25, to open their second season in one of the nation's most potent conferences. Following the encounter with the Hoyas, VU returns to the Main Line to host another non-conference duel, this one against California at noon on Sunday, March 27.
