EASTON, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats (4-4-3 overall, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) and the Lafayette Leopards (5-2-3 overall, 1-1-0 Patriot League) played to a 0-0 draw in men's soccer action here on Tuesday evening.
"Lafayette is a very good defensive team and the field was wet, so it became a battle of wills," stated Villanova head coach Tom Carlin. "There were a lot of individual battles, 50-50 balls that we won our share of. But it was tough to get into any kind of rhythm offensively."
The game was a tight defensive battle right from the outset. The two teams combined for just two first half shots, neither of which was on goal. Villanova had a 3-1 edge in corners but neither the Wildcats John Fogarty or Lafayette's Nathan McDonald were called on to make a save.
The tenor of the match did not change after intermission. Scoring chances were precious and Fogarty's single save was the only one either goalkeeper had to make through the first 90 minutes of action.
The contest remained scoreless at the end of regulation.
"I thought our backline and (Fogarty) were exceptional," noted Carlin. "They did a good job of controlling that part of the field. We had some moments where we created a few chances but didn't get the breakthrough we were looking for."
Wildcats' sophomore Dylan Renna had the only shot of the first overtime as both squads fought to produce the game-winner. But the match remained scoreless after 100 minutes of activity here.
The game ended with each team being credited with three shots. The three shots were a season-low for the Wildcats and the Leopards were credited with the contest's only shot on goal.
"We were in a situation where we had a short turnaround from a game Saturday night to play again tonight," said Carlin. "Now we have a few days to get ourselves ready for DePaul."
Next up for Villanova is a home date on Saturday with BIG EAST rival DePaul. That game at the VU Soccer Complex begins at 1:00 p.m.
"It will be good to be home again," stated Carlin, whose team has played three straight away from the Main Line. "DePaul is a formidable opponent. The key for us is to keep creating chances. If we do that, good things will happen."
