MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The Villanova volleyball team fell at West Virginia in a 3-1 (26-28, 21-25, 25-17, 11-25) contest Friday evening. The Wildcats played tough defense combining for 91 digs, but were unable to stop the Mountaineers .
Sophomore Kim Maroon had a match-high 36 digs, while senior Amy Gulyas collected 19.
Freshman Krista Andersen and sophomore Courtney Oertli notched double-doubles as Andersen recorded 10 kills and 12 digs. Oertli gave out 40 assists and collected 11 digs.
Villanova (16-10, 5-6 BIG EAST) had three post double figure kills as sophomore Maggie Mergen led the way with 16. Andersen and senior Elysse Studzinski each tallied 10.
Set one was close throughout and extended into extra points. After trailing 15-12, the Wildcats were able to take a 16-15 after Mergen connected on a kill and three points served from Gulyas. `Nova scored three unanswered points to take a 19-16 lead after a kill and two aces from Mergen. The Wildcats called their second timeout after West Virginia jumped ahead, 22-20. The Mountaineers served for set point with a 24-20 lead, but a service error gave the `Cats the ball. Two errors and an ace from Andersen tied the set at 24 apiece and the teams traded points back-and-forth before West Virginia grabbed the win, 28-26.
After falling 25-21 in the second frame, Villanova rebounded to take the third set. The Wildcats trailed 8-3 and used a timeout, but went on a 7-2 run after the break to tie the set at 10 each. The set tied three times before the Wildcats used a 7-1 run, with serves from sophomore Kara Chatham, to grab a 20-14 lead. Sophomore Maria Nolan connected for a kill to give Villanova set point and Andersen found the floor for the winning kill, 25-17.
The Wildcats could not push the match into a fifth set as they found themselves trailing 7-2 early in the fourth frame and 18-9 going into their final timeout. Studzinski put the ball to the floor after the break, but `Nova would score just one more point and fell 25-11.
The Wildcats travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday, Nov. 8. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
