EASTON, Pa. - A Kristin Ruminski goal in the third overtime lifted Lafayette to a 13-12 victory over Villanova (4-9) in a women's lacrosse match played here on Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats, fresh from a 12-5 victory over La Salle on Thursday evening at Villanova Stadium, picked up right where they left off in this one. Villanova scored six of the game's first seven goals, the last coming off the stick of junior Katie Stone to give the `Cats a 6-1 cushion near the midpoint of the first period.
The Leopards rallied, however and drew within 6-5 at halftime. It was a tight duel the rest of the way.
Midway through the second half VU regained the lead with a three goal burst that was capped by a Kyler O'Shea goal with 11:24 left in regulation. But Lafayette answered with three straight goals of its own, the last coming from Ruminski with 2:26 left in regulation. The game remained knotted at the end of 60 minutes.
The Leopards scored first in the initial overtime but McKenna responded with her fifth goal of the afternoon with 32 seconds left in the stanza to draw Villanova even at 12 with 32 seconds left. The second overtime was scoreless but Ruminski ended matters at 2:42 of the third overtime when she scored an unassisted goal to give the Leopards the triumph.
