VILLANOVA, Pa. - he Villanova volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 3-15) decision to Marquette on Saturday afternoon in the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse.
With the loss, Villanova falls to 13-14 overall and 4-7 in the BIG EAST.
The Wildcats were led by senior Dana Tartazky and freshman Morgan Petkovich who tallied 14 and 10 kills respectively. Tartazky notched a double-double, also collecting 10 digs in the match.
Freshman Kim Maroon posted 23 digs, while junior Chelsea Graman dished out 39 assists. The Wildcats combined for a season-best 13 team blocks.
Villanova started strong in the first set jumping to a 6-3 lead as Marquette called a quick timeout. Graman connected on a kill to keep the Wildcats in front, 15-9. A 5-2 run from Marquette took the score to 17-15 and the Golden Eagles tied the set at 20 after a service error from the Wildcats. After a miscue from Villanova, Marquette served for set point, but a kill from freshman Maggie Mergen and Tartazky got the `Cats to within one point, but the Golden Eagles earned the first set victory after an error from VU.
The Wildcats got on the board first in the second set and launched to an 8-2 lead, sending Marquette into a timeout. After Tartazky connected on a kill Villanova remained in front, 14-6 as the Golden Eagles used their final timeout. Petkovich slammed a kill holding on to an 18-12 lead as the Wildcats would not be threatened from Marquette and took the second set, 25-20.
Marquette held a 14-11 advantage after a kill in the third frame, but Villanova used a 7-1 run to regain the lead at 18-15 and sent MU into a timeout. A kill from Mergen and back-to-back errors from the Golden Eagles forced Marquette to use its final timeout, trailing 24-20. Maroon served for set point, but the Golden Eagles held on for one final play as a kill from Tartazky gave Villanova the third set victory, 25-21.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fourth set to force Villanova into a timeout, but the `Cats responded with a 9-3 run after the break to take a 10-9 lead of their own. Petkovich connected on a kill as MU used a timeout, trailing 17-14, but the Golden Eagles scored four unanswered points after the timeout to regain the lead, 18-17. The Wildcats offense could not over come the deficit as they fell, 25-20.
In the fifth and deciding set, Marquette jumped in front, 10-0 and the Wildcats could not recover as they fell, 15-3.
Villanova returns to the court on Sunday, Nov. 9 to take on Syracuse at 2:00 p.m.
