Final Stats
easton, Pa - The Villanova women's lacrosse team (3-13, 0-6 Patriot League)played the Lafayette Leopards (6-8, 2-3 Patriot League) even for 66 minutes but in the end, the Wildcats couldn't come away with the win despite a valiant effort. Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) and Taylor Lucy (Ocean View, Del.) each scored hat tricks in the game, while Kathleen Kelly (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Christina Bahrs (Oceanport, N.J.) each had two goals.
Lafayette came out and scored two early goals before Villanova answered with three of their own. Taylor McKenna (White Plains, N.Y.) started it off and Cindy Koza (Thorton, Pa.) tied it before Lucy scored her first goal off of a pass from Alex Garvey (Summit, N.J.).
The Leopard made it 6-3 with a run including two goals by Madalyn Booth who had five for the afternoon. Lucy then scored her second taking the ball from Jamie Schneider (Salisbury, Md.). Lafayette made it 7-4 but Villanova had a run of their own including goals by Bahrs, Gardner and Kelly. Schneider notched her second assist of the day on Bahrs' score.
The teams traded goals to end the half making it 8-8 at the break.
The second half was more of a defensive battle, with both squads going back and fourth. Bahrs and Kelly each scored their second goals and Stevie McFadden (Reisterstown, Md.) snuck one past the `keeper to make the score 11-11 at the end of regulation.
The first overtime started with Lucy notching her third goal, but again Lafayette had an answer adding two. With just fifty second remaining, Gardner found the back of the net to tie it up 13-13 and send the game into a second overtime. This overtime period was a "golden goal" opportunity where the team that scores first wins.
The teams played each other evenly making it look like the game may go to penalty shots, but Samantha Ziegler was able to score at 1:32 to get the win for the Leopards.
Like the score, the rest of the statistics were incredibly even. The teams tied at 33 groundballs and Villanova had 34 shots to Lafayette's 32. Jessica Brozena (West Long Branch, N.J.) took the loss but did stop 13 shots.
The Wildcats will close out the 2006 season at Saint Joseph's on April 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
