Final Stats
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova women's lacrosse (2-3) lost to the Drexel Dragons (3-0) Wednesday night, 17-5, at Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats were held scoreless until 16:21 in the second half, but finally found the back of the net in the remaining minutes to make a game of it.
Drexel struck just a minute and a half into the game with a goal by Kerry Kelly. This started a 12-0 Dragon run that included three goals by Kelly and a hat trick by Colleen Rocks as well.
Villanova began chipping away at the deficit with a goal by Christina Bahrs (Oceanport, N.J.) at 16:21. Bahrs put another one away at 12:29 off of a free position shot. Kathleen Kelly (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored off of another free position shot at 8:34 to make the score 14-3, but again Drexel had an answer. The Dragons scored two more exactly a minute apart to increase the deficit to 13.
Sophomore Alex Garvey (Summit, N.J.) and junior Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) each added a goal but it was not enough. At the final whistle the score was 17-5, Dragons.
Lauren LaBella had the win for Drexel with five saves and Jessica Brozena took the loss dropping to 1-3 for the year but notching 15 saves. The telling stat of the game was shots as the Dragons held a huge advantage, 41-16. Villanova picked up 23 groundballs to Drexel's 22 but the Wildcats gave the ball away 19 times while the Dragons had only 14 turnovers.
Villanova continues its home stand with a game against Holy Cross on Sunday at Villanova Stadium. The game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
