Rutgers Records 15-3 Win Over Wildcats

April 6, 2005

PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 6, 2005) - Senior Katie Batiuk (Jackson, NJ) scored a season-high six goals to lead the Rutgers women's lacrosse team to a 15-3 victory over Villanova on Wednesday at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights improve to 4-6 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 0-10.

Freshman Kate Shomo (Medford Lakes, NJ) scored the first of three Rutgers goals to open the game. Her unassisted tally 1:07 into the contest proved to be the lone goal in the first 12:51 until Batiuk scored her first goal of the evening off a Lindsay Rising (Malvern, PA) assist. Sophomore Jamie Farewell (Medford Lakes, NJ) followed with an unassisted goal nearly three minutes later.

Nova finally got on the board a little more than halfway into the opening stanza as Amy Rocap scored an unassisted goal for the Wildcats to cut the Villanova deficit to 3-1.

Batiuk added a goal with a little more than six minutes remaining in the half to give Rutgers a 4-1 lead at the break.

Much like the first half, the second was all Scarlet Knights. RU exploded for the first eight goals of the final half to break the game open, giving the Scarlet Knights a 12-1 advantage with eight minutes remaining. RU did most of its damage early in the second half with seven goals in the first seven minutes of the final period. RU scored three goals in the first two minutes of the half with Shomo opening the scoring 17 seconds into the final period and Batiuk adding a pair of scores in the next minute of action.

Freshman Courtney Wernick (Baltimore, MD) scored her first collegiate goal during the run, adding her second score of the contest later in the half. Freshman Rachel Bruce (Arnold, MD) got in on the scoring action with her sixth goal of the season and junior Kathleen Holley (Pottstown, PA) scored the seventh and rounded out the RU scoring run with the Scarlet Knights' ninth-straight goal with eight minutes to play.

Rocap added two more goals for Villanova with less than three minutes to play to make it 12-3, but Rutgers wasn't finished as Holley added her third score of the evening and Batiuk brought her scoring total to six with the final two goals of the contest to earn the 15-3 victory.

Rutgers dominated possession throughout, outshooting Villanova, 32-9. RU also held an 18-11 lead in ground balls.

Senior goalie Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) made four saves in the game for the Scarlet Knights, while Villanova's Jessica Brozena and Lauren Latchford split time in goal for the Wildcats, combining for nine saves.

Rutgers now owns a 15-0 record in the all-time series against Villanova.

Wednesday marks the second time this season Rutgers has scored at least 15 goals in a game. The Scarlet Knights scored a season-high 18 goals in an 18-1 victory over Bucknell, which, like Villanova, is a member of the Patriot League, on March 23.
