Final Stats
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Lehigh Mountain Hawks (4-6 overall, 1-3 Patriot League) scored three goals in the span of 21 seconds in the final minute of play to defeat Villanova (0-9 overall, 0-4 Patriot League) 16-15 in a Patriot League contest played at Villanova Stadium this afternoon. Amy Chamberlain scored the game-winner with 26 seconds left in the game for Lehigh.
One day after torrential rain forced this game to be postponed until today, the weather was cool and overcast. The two teams then staged an entertaining back and forth affair.
Lehigh gained the upper hand early, building a 4-2 advantage when Barrie Cominsky scored off a feed from Vienna Pharaon with 16:48 to go in the first half. But Villanova scored the game's next five goals, including a pair from senior Amy Rocap (Vienna, Va.) to create a 7-4 edge with 6:12 to go in the first half. However, Lehigh scored three more times before the half while the `Cats got only one more score, this from Cindy Koza (Thornton, Pa.) to make it 8-7 in favor of Villanova at intermission.
The Mountain Hawks rallied to score five of the first seven goals in the second half to create a 12-10 lead when Chamberlain scored with 18:11 left in regulation. Then it was Villanova's turn, as sophomore Becky Gardner scored twice to lead a `Cat charge of four straight goals to help the `Cats create a 14-12 lead. The teams then traded goals to make it 15-13 Villanova with 7:36 to go.
Villanova held that lead until the final minute. Lissy King scored on a wraparound shot with 47 seconds left to cut the Lehigh deficit to one. The Mountain Hawks controlled the draw and King raced down the field and deposited the tying shot into the net with 36 seconds to go. On the play, a foul was whistled, thereby awarding Lehigh possession at the center circle when action resumed. This time it took just ten seconds for Chamberlain to fire a shot into the net to give the Mountain Hawks the win.
