Wildcats Suffer 21-4 Loss at No. 20 Delaware

NEWARK, Del. - Delaware scored 13 goals in the first half, including 11 unanswered, and jumped out to a 13-1 halftime lead that Villanova was unable to overcome, as the Wildcats suffered a 21-4 setback on Wednesday afternoon at Rullo Stadium. With the loss, Villanova falls to 0-5 on the season, while the No. 20 Blue Hens improve to 2-1.

Villanova, which was out shot by Delaware 42-10, was unable to overcome Delaware's offensive attack that included four goals from Katie Muth. The Wildcats' first goal came with 10:30 remaining in the first half as sophomore Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) scored her 12th of the season.

Casey McCrudden scored first for Delaware and totaled three goals on the afternoon. Erin Edell, Katie Hogan and Stephanie McQuade each added hat tricks for the Blue Hens.

Gardner scored her second unassisted goal of the afternoon less than three minutes into the second half, to bring the score to 14-2. Muth scored Delaware's first goal of the second half. After Gardner's second goal, the Blue Hens score seven more, including a pair from Hogan, before the Wildcats would score their final two.

Freshman Kathleen Kelly (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored her first career goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game. Senior Amy Rocap (Vienna, Va.) added the last goal for Villanova, with one minute left in the contest, for the final score.

Freshman Lauren Latchford (Morristown, N.J.) spent the last 45:51 in the goal, allowing nine scores while saving eight shots.

The Wildcats return to action on Friday, March 18 when they travel across town to face City Six rival La Salle at 3:30 p.m.
