Wildcats Fall to Fairfield in Season Opener, 15-13

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Freshman Stevie McFadden (Reisterstown, Md./Maryvale Prep) scored four goals in her collegiate debut on Saturday, Feb. 26, but it was not enough to lead the Wildcats to victory and Villanova (0-1) fell to Fairfield (1-0) by a score of 15-13 at Villanova Stadium in its 2005 season opener.

The Wildcats started a scoring spree early into the contest, knocking in four goals in the first ten minutes of play. Sophomore Becky Gardner (Manhasset, N.Y.) provided the first goal, while Amy Rocap (Vienna, Va.), McFadden, and Cindy Koza (Thornton, Pa.) added the next three.

Fairfield responded at 4:15 and 8:10, with goals of its own before the Wildcats scored seven unanswered goals to lead 12-5 going into the half. McFadden scored two of the seven goals and then added another at 27:53 to close out the half.

The Stags came back from the break ready to rally, and did so, scoring 10 in a row before Gardner provided the last goal for the `Cats as time expired. In addition to McFadden's four goals, the Wildcats had offense from Gardner, who scored three, Rocap (three), Kristen Morea (Carle Place, N.Y.) (two) and Koza (one). Assists came from Morea and Koza, who had two and one, respectively.

Jess Brozena (West Long Branch, N.J.) and Lauren Latchford (Morristown, N.J.) each saw time in the goal, with Brozena coming up with five saves and Latchford adding four.

The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday, March 2 when they head across town to take on City Six rival La Salle at 3:30 p.m.
