VILLANOVA, PA. - In women's lacrosse action on Saturday, March 13 at Villanova Stadium, Temple made its season opener a successful one, sending the Wildcats to their third straight defeat by virtue of a 12-5 decision.
After Villanova (1-3) tied the game at three with a goal by Jaime Schneider at the 10:15 mark of the first half, the Owls (1-0) scored five straight goals over a stretch of 26:30, spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second half, to build an 8-3 lead.
The Wildcats responded with two goals by freshman Becky Gardner, before Temple closed the game with four goals to provide the final margin. The loss kept the 'Cats winless at home in 2004, after opening the season with a victory at Fairfield.
Temple's 37-22 advantage in ground balls played a large role in the final outcome.
Gardner scored four of Villanova's five goals on the afternoon, moving into a tie with Amy Rocap for the team-lead with eight. The Wildcat defense was unable to stop Temple's Tiffany Pulaski, who tallied four goals and three assists. Megan Condon added three scores for the Owls.
Megan McLouth picked up the win in goal, stopping a game-high 15 shots. Villanova's Jessica Brozena had 12 saves.
Monmouth is next up for the 'Cats, on Tuesday, March 16 at 3:30 p.m. in West Long Branch, N.J.
