VILLANOVA, Pa. --- On Thursday, April 25 in the 2002 regular season finale at Villanova Stadium, the Villanova Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead and would go on to cruise to the 17-10 victory over non-conference foe Drexel. Seniors Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) and Cecily Pierce (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) combined for six goals and five assists in the win on senior day. With the victory, the Wildcats end their regular season record at 9-7 heading into post-season play.
Freshman Katie Komlo (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal) got the Wildcats started to begin first half play when she connected on a shot at the 28:08 mark. Two minutes later, junior Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y.) beat Dragon goalie Shirley Sarker and would then feed DePeters for her first of back to back goals at the 25:07 mark to give the 'Cats a 3-0 advantage. Villanova would go on to dominate the first half leading 7-0 before Drexel's Katrina Rand got the Dragons on the scoreboard with her first of three goals on the afternoon. The Wildcats, however, controlled the remainder of the half and produced eight more goals to take a commanding 15-2 lead at the break.
In the win, Carolan and DePeters set the offensive pace by tallying four goals, all of which came in the first half. Rounding out the scoring for Villanova was Komlo with three, Pierce and Bess Hanley (Lutherville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) with two, and junior Elizabeth Firth (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and freshman Kristen Cornicello with one.
In the net for the Wildcats, Brandy Greneir (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) made six saves while picking up the victory.
Villanova will get back into action on Saturday, April 27 when they take on American in the semi-final round of the Patriot League tournament in Easton, Pa. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Rappold Field on the campus of Lafayette College.
