On Saturday, April 20 at West Field in Lewisburg, Pa., the Villanova University women's lacrosse team tallied a 10-6 victory over the host Bucknell Bison. With the win, Villanova improves to 8-6 overall and finishes its Patriot League slate with a 4-2 mark, while Bucknell falls to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in Patriot League action.
Bucknell got on the scoreboard first when Laura Seiboth tallied an unassisted goal at the 5:47 mark. Villanova responded by registering three-straight goals with Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit), Katie Mannix (Crofton, Md.) and Cecily Pierce (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) scoring for the Wildcats. Bucknell's Suzanne Raffaele netted a goal at the 24:59 mark to cut Villanova's lead to 3-2 heading into intermission.
The story of the game in the second half was the play of Villanova junior Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) who dominated the Bison over the last 30 minutes of the contest. Carolan scored four of the first five goals of the second stanza to give the 'Cats a 7-3 advantage with 11:39 left in regulation.
After Bucknell recorded three consecutive goals to pull within one at 7-6 with 5:20 remaining, Carolan scored her fifth goal of the game to give Villanova a two-goal lead at the 57:39 mark. Freshman Katie Komlo (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal) and Pierce added insurance goals for the 'Cats. With her five score performance, Carolan now has 40 goals on the season and becomes just the fifth player in Villanova women's lacrosse history to register 40 or more goals in a season.
In goal for Villanova, sophomore Brandy Greneir (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) made eight saves and was credited with the victory. Villanova outshot the Bison, 30-20, and the Wildcats tallied 42 groundballs compared to Bucknell's 30.
The Wildcats will return to action on Monday, April 22, when they take on the University of Pennsylvania at Villanova Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
