Fairfield, Conn.- The Fairfield and Villanova University women's lacrosse teams battled back and forth with passion all afternoon, but in the end it was Fairfield junior Megan Cunnigham's draw control and goal just 10 seconds into sudden death overtime that mattered, as the Stags and first-year head coach Laura Brand claimed their first win of the 2002 season 15-14 today on University Field.
The two teams finished 60 minutes of regulation tied at 13 apiece, and at 2:35 of the first overtime Meghan Carolan scored her sixth of the game to put the Wildcats ahead, but with just 4.5 seconds remaining of the second overtime period Fairfield's Caitlin Perry converted a free position shot to force sudden death. Junior Megan Cunningham would control the ensuing draw, sprint the length of the field and beat the Wildcat goalkeeper with a bounced shot to secure the win.
Fairfield was led in scoring by sophomore Jessica Conahan's four goals and two assists, while Megan Uhr had three goals, and Lauren Uhr, Perry and Cunningham all had two goals apiece. Megan Main and Colleen Sindall would also score for the Stags.
Villanova was led by Meghan Carolan's six goals and Sarah DePeter's five goals. Kathleen Crane made 10 stops including two in overtime for Fairfield. She collects her first win of the season. Villanova's Brandy Grenier made eight saves for the Wildcats.
The win improves Fairfield to 1-2 overall, while the loss drops the Wildcats to 1-2. The Stags return to action Wednesday when they host Hofstra. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
