VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Villanova Wildcats scored the first 11 goals of the afternoon en route to a 19-4 victory over Siena College at Villanova Stadium on Wednesday. The win is Villanova's first in two outings this season (0-0 Patriot League).
Villanova struck quickly, scoring at the 29:36 mark when senior Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y.) beat Siena goalie Mary-Elizabeth Dupelle. The 'Cats then struck again when junior Meghan Carolan (Hicksville, N.Y.) beat Dupelle just 14 seconds later to make it a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, freshman Katie Ardington (Summit, N.J.) took a pass from senior Cecily Pierce to extend the lead to 3-0.
That spurt began a run of 11 unanswered Villanova goals that didn't stop until just before intermission. At halftime the Wildcats held a 12-1 advantage.
Carolan, a preseason first team All-Patriot League selection, paced the Wildcats with three goals and four assists. Pierce added three goals and a pair of assists while DePeters contributed two goals. A total of 11 Villanova players scored goals on a rainy afternoon.
Sophomore Brandy Grenier (Rochester, N.Y.) made seven saves in the Villanova net.
Sophomore Stephanie Petruccelli (Massapequa, N.Y.) scored two goals for the Saints while Dupelle was credited with six saves.
Villanova (1-1 overall) plays its first road game of the 2002 season on Saturday when it travels to Fairfield to face the Stags at 1:00 p.m.
