Men's Soccer Rallies To Defeat West Virginia 3-2

Oct. 19, 2002

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Freshman Charlie Rowan scored two goals less than five minutes apart in the second half to lead Villanova (4-10-0, 2-6-0) to a 3-2 come from behind victory over West Virginia (3-9-2, 0-6-1) here on Saturday night.

For the third consecutive game, Villanova found itself in an early hole. Linton Gaston scored off an assist from Matt Maher to give West Virginia an early 1-0 lead. Then after a Mountaineer was pulled down in the penalty area, Aaron Pitchkolan converted a penalty kick at the 18:50 mark to put the Mountaineers by a pair. That's where the score stood at halftime.

Senior back Stephen Leaman got the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute. Jonathan Lopuski was credited with an assist on Leaman's first goal of the 2002 campaign.

Then it became the Rowan show. The freshman took a feed from midfielder Dan Massimini and slipped it into the net to tie the game at the 74:20 mark. Then, at 79:05, Rowan collected the rebound of his own shot and put it into the net to give Villanova a 3-2 edge.

Goalkeeper Sean Teesdale made the one goal lead stand up. Teesdale ended the evening with four saves and the 'Cats outshot West Virginia 26-19.

Villanova returns to the Soccer Complex on Wednesday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Notre Dame in another Big East match.
