Villanova, PA - With 49 seconds remaining in regulation Brian Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown) tied the game at 9-9 with clutch goal and then watched as brother Justin Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown) drilled home the sudden death game-winner at the 3:15 mark of overtime to give Villanova a 10-9 victory over the #19 Pennsylvania Quakers. With the victory, Villanova improves to 6-6 overall, while Pennsylvania falls to 6-6 overall.
The game started dramatically in Villanova's favor as the Wildcats took a commanding 3-0 lead after one quarter. The Wildcats got on the board less than two minutes in when Michael Holloway (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep) scored unassisted. With a 1-0 lead, Villanova added two more goals courtesy of senior attackman Andrew Bogle (Wilton, CT/Wilton). Bogle's first goal came unassisted, while his second tally came off a feed from Justin Marks.
In the second quarter it was a different story as Penn came out and dominated the opening two and half minutes, scoring three consecutive goals. During the run, Penn's Scott Solow scored off an assist by Alex Kopicki as well as Todd Minerley unassisted and Adam Solow unassisted. Villanova ended the Quaker surge at the 10:03 mark when Holloway got his second goal on the afternoon. Holloway's goal came off a phenomenal pass from Brian Marks from behind the cage. Trailing 4-3, Penn got two quick goals from Peter Scott to take their first lead of the game, 5-4, with 7:11 remaining in the half. Both defenses stepped to the forefront until Randall Calvert (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) hammered home the tying goal unassisted. The game went into halftime tied 5-5.
In the second half, Penn regained their lead courtesy of Peter Scott, who netted this third goal on the evening. Scott's goal gave Penn the lead 6-5 and was assisted by Adam Solow. Villanova would respond by tallying the next two crucial goals. Stepping up for Villanova was freshman David Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, NJ/Delbarton). Cacciabeve recorded two scores at the 8:31 mark and 4:15 marks to give Villanova a 7-6 advantage. Cacciabeve's first goal was unassisted, while the second came off a feed from Bogle. Penn answered right back just 42 seconds after Cacciabeve's second goal. This time it was Scott Solow who struck unassisted to again retie the game. The Wildcats would end up taking the lead into the fourth quarter after Justin Marks found Brian Marks cutting across the crease for Villanova's eighth goal on the evening.
With the score 8-7 in favor of Villanova, Penn clamped down and played phenomenal defense in the fourth quarter. The Quakers did not allow Villanova a goal until Brian Marks tied the game with 49 seconds remaining in regulation. The Quakers would get two goals during their key defensive stand to take the lead 9-8 until Marks struck. Scoring for Penn were Scott Solow, his third goal, assisted by Jake Martin and Todd Minerley, his second goal, unassisted.
In overtime, Villanova's Matt Lucas (Fairfax Station, VA/Paul VI) won the crucial opening face-off as he scraped against Penn's Billy Sofield. Lucas pushed the ball out to Owen Corso (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) who picked it up and raced the length of the field. Wildcat head coach Randy Marks called a timeout and set up his offense. The move paid of as Marks' son Justin Marks struck at the 3:15 mark off a tightly roped feed from Calvert, giving Villanova a 10-9 sudden death overtime victory.
Villanova will be back in action on Sunday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m. when they Marist in Villanova Stadium.
