Baltimore, MD - On Saturday, April 21, the Villanova men's lacrosse team traveled south to do battle with nationally ranked #8 Loyola College. Loyola jumped out to commanding 6-1 lead just 18 minutes into the contest and never looked back, defeating Villanova 17-10. With the loss, Villanova falls to 5-6 on the year, while Loyola improves to 8-2.
Loyola got the scoring started in the first when Bobby Horsey connected just under three minutes into the game unassisted. Villanova's Randall Calvert answered the Greyhound goal with one of his own assisted by Scott MacMullan. Loyola would go on to tally the next five goals in a six minute span over the end of the first quarter and beginning of the second quarter.
Trailing 6-1, Villanova cut into the lead with two quick goals at the10:41 mark and 7:54 mark of the second quarter. Tallying first for Villanova was Michael Holloway unassisted and then Calvert, his second on the afternoon, courtesy of Richie Kratz. With their lead cut to 6-3, Loyola went on another run. The Greyhounds would score three more times to take a commanding 9-3 advantage heading into halftime.
In the third quarter things did not get any better for Villanova as Loyola outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the quarter. The Greyhounds would get the first goal, but then Villanova would tally the next two to bring the score to 10-5 with 11:06 remaining in the game. Villanova's goals came off the sticks of Holloway, his second of the game, unassisted and Brian Marks unassisted. Unfortunately for Villanova that was all the goals they would get in the third quarter. Loyola would get four straight scores from four different players over the remainder of the quarter to put the game away.
In the fourth, Villanova rallied after two more Greyhound goals pushed the lead to 16-5. The Wildcats ran off four straight goals in a minute and 57 second span to bring the score to 16-9. Scoring for Villanova were Owen Corso unassisted, Justin Marks from Richie Kratz, Andrew Bogle from Brian Marks, and Holloway unassisted. For Corso the goal was his first in 2001. Loyola would end the Villanova rally when Joey Case recorded his third goal of the game at the 2:12 mark. The last Wildcat goal came courtesy of Bogle assisted by Brian Marks and brought the final score to 17-10.
Villanova will be in action next on Wednesday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. when they host city rival Pennsylvania in Villanova Stadium.
