VILLANOVA, Pa. - Juniors Sarah DePeters (Rochester, N.Y.) and Cecily Pierce (New Canaan, Conn.) combined for seven goals to help lead the Villanova Wildcats to a 15-9 victory over the St. Joseph's Hawks in a game played Thursday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. DePeters ended the day with four goals and an assist while DePeters added three goals. Villanova improves to 5-7 overall, 2-1 in the Patriot League while St. Joseph's falls to 3-7 overall, 0-1 in the Atlantic Ten.
St. Joseph's took an early 1-0 lead when Shannon Hungate (Lansdale, Pa) scored at the 28:46 mark of the first half. But Julie Feddeman (Potomac, Md.) scored to knot matters at one at the 27:38 mark. After a Bernadette Smith goal made it 2-1 for the Hawks at the 25:28 mark, Villanova reeled off the next four goals to build a 5-2 edge at the 19:09 mark. Sophomore Jackie Higgins (Manhasset, N.Y.), DePeters (2) and Pierce accounted for the Wildcats goals in the flurry which put them into the lead for good.
A Smith goal at the 17:29 cut the lead to two but sophomores Caitlin Cocks (Northport, N.Y.) and Meghan Carolan scored to give the 'Cats a 7-3 lead. Villanova scored three more times before intermission while Smith countered with a pair for the Hawks to make it 10-5 Villanova at the break.
Villanova put the game away early in the second half. Carolan, Feddeman, freshman Katie Mannix (Crofton, Md.) and DePeters scored in the first ten minutes of the period to create a 14-5 cushion. Villanova then glided home to the 15-9 win.
In net Brandy Grenier stopped six shots to earn the victory.
The Wildcats travel to Bucknell on Saturday for an important Patriot League battle. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
