The Sellers' Show Sparks the Wildcats Past the Explorers

Sept. 8, 1999

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Villanova Soccer Stadium, the Villanova University women's soccer team defeated the La Salle Explorers, 4-1, behind an outstanding performance by two different Wildcat players named Sellers. Lauren, a senior from Yardley, Pa., and the Peddie School, and Quinn, a freshman from Burlington, N.J., and Burlington Township High School, teamed up to lead a tremendous Wildcat offensive attack. With the victory over the Explorers on Wednesday, Villanova remained undefeated at 3-0-0.

The game was a defensive battle in the first half and remained scoreless heading into intermission. Sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig kept the Explorers off balance with two first-half saves. Her counterpart on the other side of the field, Kaitlin Glass, also had two first half saves for La Salle to hold the 'Cats offense in check.

At the 53:08 mark of the second half, Villanova sophomore Angela Scialdone found Lauren Sellers on the left side of the net. Sellers beat Glass from five yards out to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. La Salle retaliated just over seven minutes later, as Dana Gavaghan knocked in a rebound off a Krista Parson shot to tie the score.

Villanova struck back at the 65:46 mark, when Lauren Sellers dished the ball off to Quinn Sellers who put her first collegiate goal in the left side of the net from 20 yards out to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. The 'Cats increased their lead to 3-1 at the 79:10 point when sophomore Jessica Painchaud took a Lauren Sellers pass and drilled a shot from 18 yards away into the top left corner of the net. With 10:10 left in regulation, Villanova put the game away on an unassisted goal by freshman Kristin Dunst.

Getting the win in goal for the Wildcats was Schillig, who stopped eight shots on the day. Taking the loss for La Salle (1-3-0) was Glass, who saved six shots.

The lethal combination of Sellers and Sellers teamed up to record two goals and two assists on the day. Lauren had one goal and two assists, while Quinn notched her first Villanova goal.

The Wildcats will resume play on Friday, Sept. 10, traveling to Cape Cod for their first game of the ECAC Cape Cod Tournament against Brown at 5:00 p.m.
