Sept. 24, 1999

Villanova, Pa.--- In Big East Conference women's soccer action on Friday, Sept. 24, at the Villanova Soccer Stadium, the Villanova women's soccer team defeated the University of West Virginia, 1-0, on a goal by freshman Kristin Dunst (Marlton, N.J., Cherokee High School) with just 1:47 remaining in the game. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 7-2-0 overall on the season and 1-0-0 in Big East play. The Mountaineers drop to 5-4-0 and 0-2-0 in the Big East with the loss.

West Virginia dominated play in the first half, out-shooting Villanova 9-1. The Mountaineers could not get the ball past Wildcat sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee High School), and the game went into the half scoreless. Schillig finished the first half of play with five saves.

In the second half, Villanova had a number of scoring opportunities, but couldn't capitalize on Mountaineer goalie Tara Berardi, who had four saves in the contest. With just under five minutes remaining in regulation, Schillig made two saves on consecutive West Virginia possessions, including a diving stop off a Katie Barnes' shot with 4:40 left in the game.

As the clock ticked under two minutes, the Wildcats got the ball through the Mountaineer defense. In a clutter just in front of the West Virginia goal, Villanova senior Lauren Sellers took a shot that was deflected to the right of the goal by a Mountaineer defender. Dunst took control of the ball and drilled a shot into the left corner of the net past Berardi to give the Wildcats the 1-0 victory.

It was an outstanding day for the two 'Cats hailing from Marlton, N.J., and Cherokee High School. Dunst's game-winning goal was her fourth goal of the season, tying her for second on the Villanova team. Getting the victory and her third shutout of the season in net was Schillig, who recorded a game-high nine saves.

The Wildcats will resume Big East play on Sunday, Sept. 25, hosting the University of Pittsburgh at 1:00 p.m.
