The Villanova Wildcats finished off the 1998 non-conference portion of their schedule with an 11-7 loss to St. Joseph's. With the win, St. Joseph's salvages one game of the four-game season series between the teams. Following the loss, Villanova falls to 25-19-1, while St.Joseph's improves to 20-24-1.
Villanova jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two and half innings. In the top of the second, freshman catcher Dan Glover doubled home senior third baseman Rick Welsh and junior center fielder Bill Brehm who had both singled. The Wildcats tallied two runs in the third, when junior pitcher Dan Boublis tripled home senior second baseman Tom Shank and Welsh hit a sacrifice fly scoring Boublis.
In the bottom of the third, the Hawks took control of the game, scoring 10 runs on seven hits in the inning. St. Joseph's was also aided in the inning by four base on balls. The big hit of the 10-run third inning, was a three-run double by left fielder Jamie Clancy.
Trailing 11-5 in the top of the eighth, the Cats rallied for two runs on a two-run home run by Glover, who finished the day two-for-four to go with a double, home run and four RBI. With runners on first and second and two outs, freshman Matt Longo struck out to end the game. The contest was called after Villanova batted in the top of the eighth due to an 11 p.m. curfew rule.
Villanova will conclude the 1998 season on Saturday and Sunday, May 9 & 10 when the Wildcats travel to Morgantown, W.V. to play the West Virginia Mountaineers in a three-game Big East series.
