Villanova, Pa.--- On Saturday, Nov. 13, in a Big East Conference volleyball match at Villanova's Jake Nevin Field House, the Villanova volleyball team lost to the University of Notre Dame, 3-0, by the scores of 15-4, 15-6, and 15-6. The loss drops the Wildcats to 9-20 overall and 0-10 in the Big East, while the Irish remain undefeated at 10-0 in conference play, and improved their overall record to 17-6.
In game one, Notre Dame jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before Villanova finally got on the board on a kill by junior middle blocker Breen Eddinger. Eddinger's kill sparked a Wildcat rally that helped Villanova close to within 9-4. The Irish, behind 9 kills in 10 attempts from Christi Girton, put the game away 15-4, to take a 1-0 match lead.
Game two saw Notre Dame open up a 4-0 advantage, but a Wildcat run tied the game at 4-4 behind three Eddinger kills. After the Irish scored five unanswered points to take a 9-4 lead, Villanova tried to rally once again, but Notre Dame pulled away to take a 15-6 victory and a two-games to zero match advantage.
The `Cats attempted to pounce on the Irish in the third game as they led early, 2-0. Notre Dame proved too strong, however, as the Irish pulled away to a 15-6 game three win and a match sweep. Notre Dame was led to victory by 16 kills and 11 digs from Girton, and 14 kills by Marcie Bomhack. Setter Denise Boylan had a team-high 35 assists for the Irish.
For the Wildcats, the match was highlighted by a pre-game ceremony honoring senior setter Stacey Moline, who notched her 3,000th assist on Oct. 29, against St. John's and Eddinger who reached the 1,000 kill plateau in the same match. On this day, Villanova was led by Eddinger and fellow junior Ruth Ann Blankenheim, who tallied 13 and 12 kills respectively. Moline registered a game-high 37 assists.
The Wildcats will wrap up the 1999 regular season at home on Sunday, Nov. 14, as they play host to the Syracuse Orangewomen at 1:00 p.m. It will be the final home game for senior setter Stacey Moline.
