Villanova Men's Soccer Loses Heart-breaker to Syracuse

Oct. 6, 1999

Villanova, Pa. --- The Villanova University men's soccer team hosted Big East foe Syracuse University in conference action. A 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and a scoreless first overtime sent the game into a second extra period that saw Syracuse score the game-winning goal with 7:50 remaining. With the loss, Villanova falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in the Big East this season.

The visitors got on the board first when Chris Aloisi headed home a goal that came off of a corner kick by Jason Baroni. Villanova, however, responded with a score of their own at 39:47 of the game. Senior co-captain Conor Porter fired a shot that rebounded off of the goalkeeper and onto the waiting foot of senior forward Donovan Hornsby. Hornsby drilled the ball into the net for his fourth goal of 1999.

The score stayed knotted at 1-1 as the halftime horn sounded. While each team had its share of solid scoring chances in the second half, neither squad could tally a goal. The first overtime was similar to the second half in that there were ample opportunities to score, yet no goal could be had. At 112:10 of the game, midway through the second overtime, Syracuse fired a shot on goal that rebounded off of the right post and landed directly in front of Syracuse player Neeraj Chopra. Chopra saw an empty net in front of him and he calmly ended the contest, 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Wildcat goalkeeper Matt Malek played valiantly in net, saving six shots, but he still took the loss for the 'Cats.

The Wildcats' next game will be at Georgetown University on Sunday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m.
