Villanova Men's Soccer Falls to West Virginia

Oct. 3, 1999

Villanova, Pa. --- The Villanova University men's soccer team hosted Big East opponent West Virginia today in conference action. On the strength of two goals by Mountaineer Craig Patton, the visitors took the contest 2-1. With the loss, Villanova falls to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in the Big East this season.

Villanova opened the game with far more energy and enthusiasm than their counterparts, but the home team's early success lasted for only about the game's first ten minutes as West Virginia (8-2-1 overall, 4-0-1 Big East) grabbed control of the first half, out-shooting 'Nova seven shots to three. At 37:32 Patton got the Mountaineers on the board with a put-back off of a rebound that hit off of the goal post. At the half, the game remained 1-0 in favor of West Virginia.

The second half saw the 'Cats again come out full of emotion and effort, and at 54:58 they got their reward as senior co-captain Conor Porter scored the tying goal from fine passes by freshman Felipe Freire and senior forward Donovan Hornsby. The goal was Porter's first of the season. Patton, however, put the Mountaineers back on top with his second goal of the afternoon. Villanova, though they had a number of chances to tie it up, just could not find the net, and the game ended 2-1. Freshman goalkeeper Sean Teesdale got his second career start and was saddled with the loss, lowering his record to 1-1-0.

The Wildcats' next game will be at home against Syracuse University on Wednesday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m.
