Villanova, Pa. --- The Villanova University men's soccer team hosted Big East foe Connecticut today in conference action. A 1-1 tie at the end of the first half turned into a 3-1 victory for the visiting Huskies. With the loss, Villanova falls to 2-13-0 overall and 0-10-0 in the Big East this season, while twelfth-ranked Connecticut improves to 10-4-0 and 6-2-0.
Villanova got on the board first at 9:48 into the game when sophomore defender John Keleher (Kansas City, Mo.) took a corner kick for the ?Cats that Connecticut?s Chris Gbandi headed into his own goal. For most of the first half, the home squad held on to the 1-0 advantage, and held the Huskies without a shot attempt until 19:52 remained in the half. However, at 39:46, Gbandi got his redemption when a Keleher foul inside the box produced a penalty kick. Gbandi blasted a shot that beat senior goalkeeper Matt Malek (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) to tie the score at 1-1.
The second half saw both teams come out aggressively, but at 69:37, after a number of good passes, Connecticut?s Michael Mordocco put the Huskies up 2-1. The visitors added another goal at 88:29 to increase the final margin to 3-1.
The Wildcats' next game will be at St. John?s University on Saturday, October 30, at 7:30 p.m.
