Oct. 13, 1999
Villanova, Pa.--- On Wednesday, Oct. 13, in Big East Conference women's soccer action, Villanova University was defeated by the Seton Hall Pirates, 1-0, in a game played in front of 215 fans at the Villanova Soccer Stadium. The loss drops the Wildcats' record to 11-4-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Big East. Seton Hall improves to 7-7-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference with the win.
Neither teams could put the ball in the net during the contest's first half, as the Pirates out shot the 'Cats by a 13-1 margin. Villanova sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee H.S.) stopped seven Seton Hall shots in the first half, however, to hold the Pirates scoreless. A stingy Hall defense held the Wildcats to only one shot, a Quinn Sellers offering that was saved by Pirate goalie Leah Miller.
At the 50:19 mark of the second half, Seton Hall senior Kelly Smith took a pass from Jamie Buerger and beat Schillig with a shot into the far corner of the net from eight yards out. The goal was Smith's 19th of the 1999 season. Despite several Villanova scoring opportunities down the stretch, Miller stopped four Wildcat shots to earn Seton Hall a 1-0 victory and a spot in the eight-team Big East Conference Tournament.
Schillig was tremendous in goal for Villanova as she stopped 11 shots in the loss, which was the 'Cats first loss to a non-ranked opponent in 1999. Getting the win in net for the Pirates was Miller, who saved five shots.
Villanova has already clinched second place in the Big East's Mid-Atlantic Division and will play the No. 3 seed in the conference's Northeast Division in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Nov. 2. With the first round being played at the four top seed's campus sites, the `Cats' second place finish in the Mid-Atlantic earns them their first-ever home conference tournament game.
The Wildcats will now go on a two-game Big East weekend road trip. Villanova will play at Providence on Friday, Oct. 15, at 1:00 p.m., and will then travel to Boston College to play on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2:00 p.m.
