Joe Portland

Joe Portland was promoted to assistant coach during the spring 2022 semester after serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the Wildcats last season.

A native of Reading, Pennsylvania, Portland has spent time at the University of Virginia, Misericordia University, West Chester University, and Muhlenberg College.
Portland served as the volunteer assistant coach at the University of Virginia for the 2019-2020 season and the fall segment of the 2020-2021 season. During his time he specialized in serve receive training and serving strategy.

While at Misericordia University as a Graduate Assistant he helped develop the brand new Men’s Program and assisted the Women’s program in posting a school record 26 wins in his second season.

Prior to his time at Misericordia, Portland was an assistant at West Chester University. There he directed the program’s offensive strategy and blocking efforts. He helped West Chester to a 22-11 record and coached four all-conference players.

Portland has also spent time coaching the KRVA Region High Performance program where he served as the Head Coach of the Youth level team that took 5th in 2018. He also served as an assistant coach for the team that won a silver medal in the Girls Youth Division in 2017.

Portland also played on the West Chester University men’s team and made the MACVC all-conference team during his playing career. He also served as President and Vice-President of the team.

Cumulatively Portland has spent 13 years coaching at the club level for various clubs such as Synergy, Spooky Nook, and X-Factor, and 9 years at the collegiate level.

Portland earned a bachelor’s degree in professional studies from West Chester before completing a master’s in organizational management at Misericordia.
