Cunningham Second in High Jump, Women’s 4x1500 Relay Tallies Top Five Time in School History

Villanova posted a time of 17:19.34 in 4x1500 meter relay, fifth in school history and fastest in 12 years

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Junior high jumper Malaika Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) came in second in the championship section of her event at the 2026 Penn Relays, celebrating with America250 on Saturday afternoon. She cleared 1.70 meters in cold and challenging conditions at Franklin Field to tally her second straight top three finish in the high jump championship at the Relays.

The field of 16 athletes collectively produced just 19 successful attempts in mid-40s temperatures accompanied by a stiff wind blowing into their faces. Add an approach to the bar on the Franklin Field infield turf as opposed to a traditional track surface and the environment was hardly a conducive one for soaring to new heights. Less than half the field – seven athletes – remained in the competition after the first two heights of 1.65 meters and 1.70 meters.

Cunningham was the only athlete without a miss through those first two heights. She was one of seven who recorded a successful jump on their first attempt of the day at 1.65 meters. When the bar moved to 1.70 meters, Cunningham was the first to make it over and stood atop the competition standings when the height increased to 1.75 meters. That mark happens to equal Cunningham's season best which she achieved in Virginia last week.

One by one, the remaining athletes stepped up to the runway and made their approaches at 1.75 meters. And one by one, they missed. Cunningham was two missed jumps by the field away from being the event champion when Tia Lucas of North Carolina Central made it over on her third attempt at 1.75 meters. Cunningham was immediately up next and down to her final try and came up just short.

The result is still an impressive one for Cunningham, who has qualified for the championship section of the high jump in all three of her collegiate seasons. She finished no worse than seventh in the competition and has improved her standing each year, going from seventh in 2024 to a tie for third place last year and then Saturday's runner-up showing.

Cunningham had only finished competing for a few short minutes when the Wildcats were lined up on the track for the Championship of America in the 4x1500 meter relay. A unique race was immediately on tap when seven of the 11 teams who had entered this event scratched for various reasons. Villanova stayed in it along with North Carolina State, Virginia and Oregon.

The third place finish for the Wildcats was still a strong steppingstone for a team which has improved by leaps and bounds over the course of the past year. Villanova's lineup of sophomore Rosie Shay (Middletown, N.J.), graduate student Nikki Vanasse (Martinsville, N.J.), junior Tilly O'Connor (Spring Lake, N.J.) and sophomore Bella Walsh (Wilmington, Del.) ran the program's fastest 4x1500 race in 12 years and the fifth-fastest in school history. They finished with a time of 17:19.34 and came in just over half a second behind Virginia after North Carolina State pulled away during the second leg of the race.

All four athletes in the Wildcats lineup were running their second race of the weekend. Vanasse competed in the open 1500 meter championship on Thursday night and posted a season best time of 4:16.72. Shay led off for the second straight day after running the 1200 meter leg of the distance medley relay on Friday afternoon. Walsh and O'Connor formed the back half of the DMR, with Walsh running the 800 meter leg and O'Connor anchoring. The team's approximate splits on Saturday were 4:19, 4:24, 4:16 and 4:18.
