PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Villanova alumna
Krestena Sullivan was inducted to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame on the back turn of the Franklin Field track during the 129
th running of the world's oldest and largest track & field competition on Saturday morning. Sullivan is the Wildcats sixth women's athlete to earn individual induction onto the Wall of Fame, which was started in 1994 on the 100
th anniversary of the Relays. She was part of two 'distance triples' during her collegiate career and was named the Collegiate Women's Athlete of the Meet in 1997 when she anchored all three winning relays.
Individual inductions to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame are based on an athlete's career accomplishments at the Relays during their scholastic, collegiate and/or professional careers. Sullivan is one of 11 women's athletes in Villanova history who has run on six or more Championship of America winning relays and one of seven who have been named the Athlete of the Meet.
One of the most heralded achievements for any school at the Penn Relays is to win the distance triple of Championship of America titles in the distance medley relay, 4x1500 meter relay and 4x800 meter relay. Sullivan was the leadoff leg of the DMR as a sophomore in 1995 and ran the second leg of both the 4x1500 and 4x800 races that year. That was the first triple in five years for the Wildcats and one of six in school history. Sullivan is the only women's athlete in school history to run a leg of all three winning relays in a distance triple in two different seasons.
She was a senior in 1997 when she anchored all three relays to championships. Sullivan is one of three athletes in school history to anchor three winning relays in a single year and is now the second of the three – along with
Kathy Franey – to be inducted onto the Wall of Fame. The other Villanovans who are individual inductees to the Wall of Fame include Wildcats head coach
Gina Procaccio, as well as
Vicki Huber,
Michelle Bennett and
Sonia O'Sullivan. Three Villanova women's relay teams are also on the Wall of Fame: the 1984 and 1988 distance medley relays along with the 1990 4x1500 meter relay.
Villanova is wrapping up competition at this year's Penn Relays with several events on Saturday, beginning with the championship sections of the discus and high jump in the morning followed by afternoon competition in the 4x800 meter relay.
