PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team dropped a Liberty Bell Classic semifinal matchup to Rider, 11-1, on Tuesday (April 1) at Villanova Ballpark. The game was called after seven innings of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncs used an RBI single and a two-run homer to jump out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Rider used three hits to score four runs in the top of the third, increasing its lead to seven runs.
Two hits by Rider and two errors by the Wildcats allowed three more runs to score for the Broncs in the top of the fifth. Then, Rider used another RBI single to score its 11
th run in the top of the sixth inning.
Villanova's
Jake McElroy got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI single, but it wasn't enough to avoid the 10-run rule that decided the game with Rider leading 11-1.
Rider starting pitcher Chris Montone earned the win, while Villanova starter
Jack Chavez took the loss.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Left fielder Austin Lemon extended his on-base streak to 21 games with a base hit in the bottom of the third inning.
- Freshman pitcher Luke Jacobson made his collegiate debut in the top of the sixth inning. He gave up one run over one full inning pitched and tallied his first career strikeout.
