SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Villanova University baseball team fell to Wofford, 11-1, in the first of a three-game series on Friday (March 21) at Russell C. King Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Terriers (16-7) got on the board first, scoring a run off of a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the second frame.
Then, Wofford extended its lead by scoring six runs in the bottom of the third. The Terriers tallied four hits and five walks in the inning.
After a scoreless fourth inning, first baseman
Aidan Barry clocked a solo home run down the left field line to get the Wildcats (11-9) on the board. Villanova trailed, 7-1, in the middle of the fifth inning.
In the bottom half of the fifth, the Terriers scored on another sacrifice fly. Then, with two outs and runners on the corners, a throw by catcher
Jason Neff bounced into the outfield, scoring the runner on third. The runner who stole second base attempted to come home, but a throw from
Connor Hale was in time to end the inning.
The Terriers tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth, extending their lead to 11-1. Freshman pitcher
Pat McKenzie recorded his first career strikeout in the inning, while sophomore left-hander
Dylan Rorech made his first career appearance after missing his freshman season due to injury.
The game was ended early after the Wildcats were held scoreless in the seventh, with Wofford winning, 11-1.
Wofford starter Branton Little improved to 3-2 with the win, while Villanova starter
Bobby Olsen fell to 1-2 after taking the loss.
