Roschell Clayton Ties For Sixth Place Finish in High Jump at NCAA Championships

Villanova senior earns first team All-America honors, ties her own school record at 1.88 meters

BOSTON, Mass.—Senior high jumper Roschell Clayton (Montego Bay, Jamaica) tied her own school record and lifetime best to earn first team All-America honors at the 2024 Division I NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon. Clayton cleared the bar at a height of 1.88 meters and tied for sixth place at the TRACK at new balance. It is her second career All-America performance and first indoors.

Clayton's finish on Saturday is eight spots higher than where she finished at the outdoor national championships last year. As she has been doing all season, Clayton got off to a fast start with three consecutive successful jumps in her indoor NCAA Championships debut. She was first in the jumping order and the first athlete to take a jump on Saturday, with her first clearance coming at 1.75 meters. She also cleared 1.80 meters and 1.85 meters on her first try.

There were 12 athletes remaining in the competition when the bar was raised to 1.88 meters, which represented not only Clayton's lifetime PR but also the facility record at the TRACK at new balance which Clayton herself held after her school record performance at the Eagle Elite Invitational in the building exactly four weeks earlier. Clayton missed on her first jump at the height but cleared the bar on her second attempt. The field of athletes was whittled to just eight after all the jumps at 1.88 meters, assuring Clayton of a first team All-America finish.

Only four athletes made it over the bar at the next height of 1.91 meters and Clayton wound up tied for sixth in the final standings. She is the third women's field athlete in program history and the second high jumper to tally a top-eight finish at the NCAA Championships. Her result on Saturday earned Villanova 2.5 points in the team scores.

This is the 36th year since the debut of women's competition at the NCAA Championships that the Wildcats have scored team points at the indoor national meet. That is tied for the fifth-most seasons in which any Division I women's program has scored at the indoor NCAA Championships. Villanova has earned a total of 111 indoor All-America honors over the years.
