RALEIGH, N.C.—Sophomore distance runner
Sadie Sigfstead (Edmonton, Alta.) broke into Villanova's all-time performance list in the 10000 meters during the opening day of competition at the Raleigh Relays on Thursday night. Sigfstead posted a time of 33:53.16 in her first collegiate 10K race and moved into sixth place in school history in the event. Three events made up the Wildcats schedule on the first of three days of competition at Paul Derr Track, including the 10000 meters along with Thursday afternoon competition in women's pole vault and women's javelin.
Sigfstead became the sixth Villanova runner to post a time below 34 minutes in the 10000 meters. Her mark of 33:53.16 on Thursday night is the fastest for a Wildcats athlete since
Caroline Alcorta ran three races below 34 minutes during the 2019 season. Sigfstead opened her outdoor campaign last week when she ran the 1500 meters at the Penn Challenge.
Fifth year field athletes
Ashley Preston (Franklinville, N.J.) and
Liv Morgan (Bronx, N.Y.) were in action earlier on Thursday. Preston qualified for the invitational section of the pole vault and cleared the bar at a height of 3.70 meters. She tied for eighth place in her section and was eliminated along with six other athletes when the bar was raised to 3.85 meters.
Morgan competed in the javelin and threw for a distance of 40.88 meters. The mark came on her third and final attempt of the day after she had earlier thrown for 40.73 meters. Morgan finished 15
th overall in a field of 38 competitors.
Coming on Friday for Villanova is competition in the 400 meters, the 1500 meters, the 5000 meters and the discus.
