VILLANOVA, Pa. The Villanova Wildcats (4-0) took on the Navy Mids (2-2) on a chilly evening at Villanova Stadium, defeating Navy (11-10) in overtime. Sophomore
Sydney Pappas dominated the game with a jaw-dropping five goals. With six goals last week against the Explorers and five goals today, Pappas is standing out as an offensive threat. Sophomore
Sami Carey came in clutch by dodging defenders and pushing one past the keeper to win the game for the Wildcats, continuing their win streak at 4-0.
It was a battle from the moment the refs blew the whistle. Senior and fifth year
Caroline Curnal won the first two draw controls and the first two goals came from Navy's Lola Leone and Charlotte Ryan. With just two minutes left in the first quarter, Carey scored and foreshadowed what was to come much later in the game.
Pappas scored her first two goals back to back in the second quarter, giving Villanova their first lead of the game. Navy was not going to let Villanova get too far ahead. They went on a four goal spree with three goals coming from Ryan and one from Tori DiCarlo. One of Ryan's goals even came with one second left in the half. Carey was not going to let this be the only goal in a time crunch.
The score going into the second half was 6-4 Navy. The first goal of the third quarter came from Junior
Jessie Lee on a man up free-position goal. Leone responded to Villanova's momentum by scoring her second goal of the match. The Wildcats were determined to go into the fourth quarter on an even playing field. The last two goals of the quarter came from Pappas and
Maddie Luer, tying the game once again.
The nail-biting fourth quarter that sent the teams into overtime saw goals from Villanova's Lee and Pappas, and Navy's Emily Messinese and Lindsay Beardmore. The second you thought one team would take the lead, the other would retaliate and charge back down the field. It was an even battle to the very end with both teams leaving it all on the field going into overtime.
Halfway through the period, Villanova was awarded a free position shot. To everyone's surprise, Pappas ripped the shot and missed it wide. The benches held their breath as Navy was awarded a free position shot just one minute later. Cheers and gasps were let out as Messinese missed the shot wide. With over a minute left on the overtime clock,
Kayla Gulmi has the ball. She passes it to Carey who curls behind the left side of the cage and pushes one past the keeper when it matters most. Villanova wins the game 11-10 in a phenomenal match versus Navy.
The Villanova Wildcats are on the road versus the University of Southern California at 4:00 PM EST on Sunday March 5.
