Washington, D.C. – The No. 3 Villanova Wildcats used an 8-3 run to close the game against the No. 1 Georgetown Hoyas but fell short, 14-12, in the BIG EAST Championship.
Villanova's
Matt Campbell had eight total goals in the BIG EAST Tournament, which is tied for the most in the conference tournament. Senior goalkeeper
Will Vitton finished with 17 saves during the championship game, which is tied for the most in a single BIG EAST Tournament game. Both were named to the All-BIG EAST Tournament team along with graduate student
Brett Baskin.
Georgetown got on the board first when James Reilly won the faceoff and went down to score just six seconds in. The Wildcats answered with a goal on their first man-up opportunity when
J.P. Basile dished it to
Brett Baskin inside to tie the game. The Hoyas got a pair of goals to pull ahead midway through the quarter, Alex Trippi scored at 13:43 and Dylan Watson got a shot to roll over the line at 6:22 to make it 3-1. After a media timeout
Luke Keating had a goal called off do to an offsides. Georgetown scored two more goals before the end of the quarter to make it 5-1.
The Hoyas netted the first three goals of the second quarter. Graham Bundy Jr. scored his second to start. Seconds later Reilly won the faceoff and dished it to TJ Haley and at 10:35 Connor Morin scored as unassisted goal to make it 8-1. The Wildcats got on the board with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter when
Matt Campbell found Baskin inside. Just 30 seconds later
J.P. Basile broke inside and scored to make it 8-3 at halftime.
Villanova's offense clicked in the third quarter scoring four goals. Morin got Georgetown on the board to start but Keating broke around the back of the goal just a couple minutes later to score. Following back-to-back Georgetown goals Campbell scored a pair. The first was unassisted at 7:54 and
Justin Coppola won the faceoff and dished it to Campbell for the second. This was the start of an 8-3 Villanova run that went until the final seconds. Trippi scored to make it a six-goal game, but Campbell dished it to
Patrick Daly inside to make it 12-7 and the end of the third.
The scoring kept going into the final quarter with the Wildcats scoring a game high five goals. After a opening goal from the Hoyas Keating and Campbell scored back-to-back in under a minute to make it a four goal game. Bundy Jr. scored to pull it back to five, but Villanova wasn't done. With 2:31 to play Baskin netted an unassisted goal to make it 14-10. After
Brody LaPorte forced a turnover Daly scored at the 1:00 minute mark to bring the Wildcats within three. Villanova called timeout after
Justin Coppola won the faceoff, Campbell took a shot that went wide that was backed up by Baskin. The graduate student broke around front and got a shot that found the back of the cage to make it a two-goal game with 32 seconds left. The Hoya's won the faceoff and got a shot off that went wide. The Wildcats didn't have time to get on offense making the final 14-12.
The Wildcats finish the season 9-6 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST action.
