Villanova, Pa.- In the final game of the regular season the Villanova Wildcats fell to the No. 2 Georgetown Hoyas 13-7. The Wildcats have qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament and will wait for the conclusion of other conference games for the final seeding.
The Wildcats move to 8-5 overall on the season and 3-2 in league play while the Hoyas are now 13-1 and 5-0 in BIG EAST action. Georgetown won the BIG EAST Regular Season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament.
Matt Campbell opened the scoring on a dish from
Luke Keating, but the Hoyas answered with three goals over four minutes to pull ahead 3-1 with 7:25 to play in the first. Keating netted an unassisted goal at 3:19 to pull the Wildcats within one at the end of the first quarter.
Georgetown scored five straight goals in the second quarter to go up 8-2. Connor Morin netted two while Graham Bundy Jr. scored a goal and assisted on two.
Gavin Burke dished it to
Patrick Daly inside on transition offense to put the Wildcats on the board before halftime. Villanova trailed going into the locker room 8-3.
Dylan Watson opened the third quarter for the Hoyas scoring three straight goals to put Georgetown up 11-3 with just under three minutes to play in the quarter. After the faceoff Campbell dished it to
Justin Coppola who ripped a shot into the back of the cage to make it 11-4 at the end of the third.
Brett Baskin netted quick back-to-back goals both assisted by Campbell to open the final quarter and make it a five-goal game. After goals by Bundy and Morin the Wildcats would score the final of the game while Daly dished it to
Stelios Kroudis for his first of the season to make the final 13-7.
Coppola from the faceoff x went 11-for-22 with a team high nine ground balls.
Reid Colwell finished with three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Will Vitton finished with 14 saves in 60 minutes between the posts.
The Wildcats will travel to Washington, D.C. next for the BIG EAST Tournament. Denver and Marquette will join Villanova and Georgetown as the teams who will play for the automatic spot in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Seeding and game times will be announced later tonight.
