CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Senior triple jumper
Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) posted his best mark of the season and secured his qualifying spot for postseason competition with a jump of 15.66 meters at the Virginia Challenge on Saturday afternoon. Villanova wrapped up three days of competition at Lannigan Field with five athletes in action, two of whom recorded personal best marks in their respective events.
Cunningham had the highlight of the day with a third place finish in the triple jump. He is building on a strong indoor campaign which saw him qualify for the NCAA Championships and earn All-America honors for the first time in his career. In Saturday's outing he recorded the mark of 15.66 meters on his second jump of the day and wound up third in a field of 29 athletes. His jump puts him into a tie for 27
th place nationally and a tie for 16
th place on this year's East region qualifying list. The top 48 declared athletes in each individual event will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary meet next month, with the top performers from that meet moving on to the national championships.
The other events on the Wildcats schedule on Saturday were the 200 meters and the 400 meter hurdles. Sophomore
Jakob Kunzer (George Town, Grand Cayman) and graduate
Richie Bush (Lawnside, N.J.), who each ran in the 400 meters on Friday, posted virtually identical times of 22.25 in the 200 meters. They ran in different heats but their times were extended out to the thousandth of a second, which showed Kunzer crossing the line in 22.245 and Bush in 22.246. The time for Kunzer was a new personal best in the 200 meters, his second time this Spring lowering his PR in the event.
Sophomore sprinter
Nicholas Mollica (Jackson, N.J.) came in 10
th out of 32 competitors in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 54.09, while junior
Mac Costonis (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) finished 16
th overall with a personal best time of 54.85. Costonis lowered his previous top time (56.01) set last season by more than a full second.
