GAINESVILLE, Fla.—After a postponement due to severe weather one night earlier, Villanova got a busy weekend started with competition in the men's javelin on the first day of the Pepsi Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium on Friday afternoon. There were three Wildcats in action in the javelin and sophomore
Andrew Grinnell (New Milford, Conn.) led the group with a mark of 59.10 meters.
Grinnell finished sixth overall in the college section of the competition and was followed by sophomore
Nick Coffey (Cranston, R.I.) and junior
Joe DiDario (Ocean Township, N.J.). Coffey placed eighth with a throw of 58.76 meters and DiDario was ninth with a mark of 56.96 meters. All three athletes rank among Villanova's top 10 performers in the javelin with the current implement which was introduced prior to the 1999 season.
In the competition on Friday each of the trio advanced from the first three throws to take three more attempts in the final round. Grinnell recorded his best mark of the day on his sixth and final throw to move up two spots in the standings. DiDario also had his best mark during the final, with his fourth attempt of the day his longest. Coffey's top throw came on his third attempt and he ranked as high as fifth in the standings during the initial round of throws.
Saturday will be a full day for the Wildcats with athletes in competition at the Florida Relays, the Philadelphia Big 5 Meet and the Sam Howell Invitational.
