Last Minute Goal Lifts Villanova Over Penn State 13-12

University Park, Pa.- Senior attackman Patrick Daly was able to scoop up a ground ball in front of the net and score in the final minute of the game to lift Villanova past Penn State 13-12.  The Wildcats move to 1-0 on the season while Penn State falls to 1-1.

Villanova jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with goals from a trio of midfielders Brett Baskin, Matt Campbell, and Austin Fraser.  The Nittany Lions got on the board, but Daly answered with his first of the day midway through the opening quarter.  Penn State would score two goals before the end of the 1st, Nils Barry netted the first at 7:06 and Jack Kelly scored with just two seconds remaining to make to make it 4-3 Villanova.

The Wildcats answered going on a four-goal run to start the second to go up by five; their largest lead of the game.  Daly would score the first three of Villanova over a seven-minute span and J.P. Basile scored his first goal as a Wildcats at 3:01 for the final goal of the run. Penn State netted two goals in the final minute to give the Wildcats an 8-5 lead at the half.

Luke Keating started off the third quarter netting what would be Villanova's only goal of the quarter at 14:24. Penn State's offense clicked in the third, scoring five goals and taking their first lead of the game with just over four to play in the quarter.   Jack Traynor, who finished with four goals for Penn State, netted two during the run.

The fourth quarter saw three ties and three lead changes with both teams battling back and forth. Sophomore Tucker Goodelle tied the game up at 10 just over a minute into the fourth and then both teams went scoreless for over six minutes until Keating found the back of the cage to put Villanova up 11-10.  Traynor tied the game up with 4:35 to play but just a minute later Daly gave the Wildcats the lead again on an unassisted goal.

Penn State tied things up again with 1:24 to go but at the 1:00 mark Daly was able to collect ground ball during the scramble in front of the goal.  He was just in front of the crease and took a shot that found the back of the cage to make it 13-12.  The Nittany Lions won the faceoff and Jack Kelly got a strong shot off that was save by Will Vitton with just nine seconds to go.  Penn State wasn't able to get another shot off making the final 13-12.

Vitton finished with 11 saves with four coming in the final quarter.  Justin Coppola was 15-of-27 at faceoffs with five ground balls. Freshman Tripp Robinson also finished with five ground balls while Keith Carra had two caused turnovers.

Next weekend the Wildcats will travel to New Haven, Connecticut to take on the Yale Bulldogs.  First faceoff is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
